Who is Thomas?
Hi there, nice to meet you, hope you are doing great.
Well you find me through the website I build and now visiting my bio. Short introduction I am Thomas, who lived for 7 years in beautiful Australia. Since 2024, I have moved to Colombia because my partner resides in Colombia. I have been a freelance website designer for the last 2 years. How did you become a website designer?
Well, I landed in the web design by coincidence that my former employer in the automotive workshop was complaining at the Friday afternoon knockoff beers that he could do with more customers because of his second location he opened a few weeks ago.
Though he had bad experiences with previous local digital marketing agencies who charged him an arm and a leg for very few additional clients. After a few beers, I bragged that for that amount I could do better, and we had a laugh for the rest of the box of beer.
Monday… he reminded me what I was bragging about last Friday. Back home I started to investigate what it actually takes to build a website. A few months later, I started to get a good understanding of how it works, so I started to build the new website for my employer; it took literally months to get it right.
Through that month’s journey, I learned a lot about website design, the do’s and don’ts. What platforms to use and what not. My first website still looks and ranks great; my previous employer is still very happy with the website.
Meanwhile, I learned after days and nights of digging what the most important aspects are to build a quality website. My main focus is on website speed, design, and performance because this is what it takes to rank.
With confidence, I can say that after 2 years of day and night investigating, trying out, studying, and learning, I can build quality websites for small to medium businesses at my own website design company.
How can you build websites for Australian small businesses
when you are living abroad?
Due to the fact that website builders/designers can do their work remotely, I am able to build websites for Australian businesses here in Colombia. If you are dealing with a web designer, for example, from Melbourne and your physical location is, let’s say, in Perth, then all the agencies build your website remotely. Thomas, I already had a quote from other agencies here in Australia, and you are way cheaper. How come?
This is because the cost of living here in Colombia for me is way lower than in Australia. I am a freelancer, so I do not have to charge you for the company car, the morning teas, office rent, or nonproductive hours of employees. I work on my own, so there are no (massive) overhead costs involved.
But you could be a scam, and when transferring my money,
it could be that I lose my money and never own a quality website.
It is a good thing to be suspicious when any kind of amount of money is involved. Though to make sure you do not have to walk around with this idea, I am one of the very few website builders who charges on delivery. So if we work together and we finalise a project together, then the payment has to be paid in full on delivery; seems fair to me.
Last but not least, I highly recommend that when you choose a local agency, you are very careful about who you are handing your hard-earned money to. It could be that you get scammed and never see a website, or they deliver a useless website that just does not rank in any way. Do not fall into the trap of fancy-looking example websites; fancy websites don’t mean the website actually works and generates more leads.
